The Tamil Nadu Mathematics Post-Graduate Teachers Association has urged the State Government and School Education Department to introduce practical examination for mathematics in the Higher Secondary Board examinations.

This was their main demand at the association's general body meeting that was held at Rasipuram on Sunday.

Associaiton State President V. Vijayakumar said that practical exam for mathematics should be on a par with other subjects such as Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science which had 50 marks for practical exams in addition to 150 marks for theory exams. Practicals make learning the concepts of mathematics easily understandable and thereby helps the students secure more marks, he added.

Their other main demand was to lessen the syllabus. Other main subjects had been prepared in such a way that their syllabus could be completed in 140 working days – including practicals – whereas mathematics syllabus had been prepared with a schedule to be completed in 220 days.

Mr. Vijayakumar said that the 140-day schedule gives the students ample time to complete the syllabus and revise it well while the students get less time to revise mathematics.

Founder President of the TNMPGTA and Managing Director of Vetri Vikas Group of Schools (Rasipuram) S. Gunasekaran in his presidential address said that School Education Minister C.V. Shanmugam had given them an assurance that practical exams for mathematics would be introduced for Plus One students in the coming academic year.

Earlier, Correspondent of Gnanamani Educational Institutions T. Arangannal released the model practical question paper for mathematics.
